Foreign Film Fridays: El Secreto De Sus Ojos

TGIF!  I’m so glad the weekend is here and although we are getting another snow storm on Sunday, I always look forward to the weekend.  After all, everybody’s working for the weekend!  Remember that song? I think I’m dating myself with that one. Well, if you didn’t know, I love 80s music. Another thing I love is watching movies at home.  My husband and I watch movies every weekend.  This is the main reason why we bought a home with a finished basement because he wanted to build a home theater.  This also fits well with our budget because we … Continue reading

Page Plus Cellular: How I’m Paying $30 a month for Verizon Coverage

**Check out my one year update here.** As I mentioned previously, one of my goals for 2014 was to reduce my cell phone expenses. My main objective was to save money but I also did not want to buy a new phone.   I currently have an iPhone 4s that is still in excellent condition and I love it.  What I did not love was the price I was paying.  My monthly bill with Verizon was $118.  This included unlimited text/data and 450 minutes of voice calls and cell phone insurance coverage.  I know, ridiculous right?  So, when my contract was … Continue reading

A Backhoe Saved our Backs!

Old man winter has been tough this year.  This week we had another 14 inches of snow in the northeast! In total we have had 55 inches of snow this winter season.  We have another five inches headed our way on Tuesday.  It seems like there is no end in sight. We ended up having to call someone to come help us move 14 inches of heavy wet snow on Friday because there was no way we could have done that our selves. The guy we called is a friend of a family member so he gave us what I … Continue reading

There’s Nothing Wrong with Renting

Although I’m a homeowner, I’m not one of those people who thinks that you’re throwing away money by renting.  I think every situation is different and you should base your decision of buying a home on your individual circumstances. Last weekend I was talking to a dear friend and she was telling me that she was getting some pressure from her mother because she was still renting.  My friend’s mother enjoys real estate and has several properties that she rents for income. She’s been doing this for over 20 years.  My friend is not against being a homeowner but she … Continue reading

Three Practical Ways we Saved $520 a Month Last Year

Last week I wrote about how we’re saving for our home emergency fund and I mentioned that last year we were able to reduce our expenses by $400 a month.  After doing a year-end review of our finances I realized that the number is actually closer to $520 a month.  So I decided to outline how we did this. Last year we started on a mission to cut back our expenses and use that extra money to pay down our debt.  We have had a nice balance on spending and saving through out the years.  We saved to put 20% … Continue reading
